SUSAN DONKIN
The Old Toys
Sometimes, on grey and rainy days, or as a special treat, we would get the old toy box out.
It was brought into the living room and the layers of dust blown off it...
And unwrapped from the crumpled, yellowing newspapers,
cowboys and indians on galloping horses,
toy cars,
wild animals and a red circus truck,
soldiers, shooting at some imagined enemy.
...The toys came out to play. |
