CHARLOTTE BAXTER

My relationship with the photographic image has grown from a desire to explore and challenge the relationship between the observer and the subject, which can also be associated with the relation between subjectivity and self-representation. My practice is concerned within the relationships of childhood, objectifying the subject, which represents my own subjectivity attempting to articulate a ground, which might be identified with the self. Central to this is my ongoing interest in the meaning of ego, particularly related to Jacque Lacan's mirror stage. I wish my work to be like a mirror, reflecting back a secret inner knowing. A self-portrait is defined by its familiar surroundings, by one's own mirror image, such as the domestic interior; this is a space to reflect on my identity.
