‘The Private Space’ was taken in Amsterdam; five of us had a little flat above a falafel shop, in amongst it all for the weekend. Our personal space, comfort within our environment enables us to see the outside world in very different ways. Travel is far more enlightening when staying with friends or in a place you can call your own.

The dark edges of the photograph guide through to Foz’s drums by his bed then rising to the window, beyond the hectic Dutch life waiting for us to begin again. Personally I find there is something very peaceful about the image, taken as I walked in to the front room, our morning after the night before.

‘The wasted space’ was taken in Newcastle, it’s a piece of waste ground trapped within many areas of the city. The barbed wire dancing along the top of the gate is in essence the entrance to no mans’ land. The gate is the frame, cut away, keeping you out but inviting you to see more; the concrete mass beyond. In the distance Metro lines and tower blocks add some optimism, but in the main it’s a space within a space, within yet more pre defined space.

‘The Natural Space’ came about after seeing David Bellingham’s work with space; he uses the negative space to create the primary focus. It got me into looking at the space between and around the subject. The stems, the thorns and the berries are the focal point, but the pale winter sky provides the backdrop to unify them, breaking through to show itself at every available interval.
