Hannah Webster

The Curators of Manchester Museum

Memory has been a major influence of mine throughout my practice. I have explored this thought in various ways. Inspired mainly by my family, I have spent a lot of time producing very personally driven work, with reference to memory loss, family history and troublesome and difficult memories.
'Collective memory' is the suggestion that our own memories are not entirely personal. Modern society shares a manufactured or artificial memory, directed by institutions such as exhibitions, museums and the media. Working with the Manchester museum, this project focuses on those who look after the collections, and make them accessible to the public. The curators of the Manchester museum now belong to a collection themselves. This body of work shows some of the people who make our history available to us.
