My work is about the language of flowers and the symbolic meanings that flowers represent. I have become interested in flowers that have obvious symbolic meaning within society and that are given on a particular day or for a particular reason. For example the red poppy has come to be a symbol of remembrance of the veterans of World War II, November 11th is now known as Poppy Day. Red roses are a symbol of love and traditionally sent on Valentine’s Day, February 14th. White lilies are a well known symbol of death and are sent as a sign of sympathy to relatives of the deceased. Daffodils have come to symbolise Easter, spring time and new life.
I decided to scan the flowers choosing to capture their beauty and detail in a new way and from a different perspective. The images are either dark and shadowy or bright and silhouette in style. My aim for this work was to produce a body of images that are simple, delicate, detailed and attractive. I take my inspiration for this project from the images painted by the Victorians to document the language of flowers.
