British seaside resorts first became popular in the 17th century when spas were discovered. Wealthy people would travel to spa resorts to drink the spa water for its medicinal properties. Nowadays, however, our resorts are very different places. Due to continual developments in tourism, it can now be just as cheap to travel abroad on a package holiday as it is to take a holiday at the seaside. Our British seaside resorts have become run down and tacky, and I have found that many seaside towns have kept a nostalgic 1950s feel about them, as though they are trying to cling on to a bygone era whilst the rest of the county is developing around them. My images of the natural aspects of these areas contradict the disappointing effects of human influence on these places. |
