Throughout my final year I have become more and more involved and interested in our Abandoned Mines Industry in the North Pennines. I am particularly concerned with the displacement and mystery of these places that were once at the forefront of human activity and livelihood. Without human control now influencing the space I am intrigued by the beauty these spaces now show. Many of the spaces I have looked at have become far more beautiful through age as they begin to crumble and collapse through time opening up as pieces of artwork on their own. These fascinating spaces are helpless in there own defence, without human intervention it is only there environmental factors that affect their appearance.

Through working with long exposures and different forms of lighting I have challenged myself and spent considerable lengths of time alone in each location to absorb the atmosphere. Gradually the Industry is slowly disappearing as the mines are gradually been suffocated by the pull of the earth to reclaim what were once earths, buildings are been knocked down and generations of mine workers are slowly fading away. It is this absence that draws me to photograph this industry, I am curious of its past existence
