At the start of the academic year, I wanted to engage upon a project focusing on people in transitional circumstances and environments. I had many ideas of who I wanted to photograph but approached just one and concentrated on them for the rest of the year. I approached an American style Lap dancing club, I was interested in how the women changed from a everyday female into a Lap dancing girl. The dressing room was where this took place, here they would put on make-up and change into their eye-catching outfits. My images focus on the everyday routines of getting ready, and their reflections in the mirrors. In painting mirrors are symbolic for the gaze of the spectator and when the person is looking at their own reflection it symbolizes their gaze. Furthermore, in literature mirrors have been used as symbols of other realities. I felt this reflected upon their occupation well. I've also focused upon their presence upon the environment of the dressing room. Over the year, I became interested in exploring individuality, and identity. I started exploring this in the dressing room and within my University. I began by making video portraits in the dressing room and then of people within the University. The portraits are minimal and center on the elements of 'the pose' and self image.
